Why Wool?
First let me introduce you to my knitting partner, Ethan, the survivor cat. Ethan has never been one to catch the mice and chipmunks that inhabit our farmstead. What he is able to catch our my stashes of yarn (only the wool kind) now matter how hard I try to hide it. He will deliver skeins of yarn like a proud kitty with his first gift of the season.
I have been knitting diaper soakers since 2008, the year my first grandchild was born. There is nothing like cloth diapering to make you feel good about what you are putting on your child and what you are not putting into the environment. There are so many ways to cloth diaper babies in the 21st century. We have certainly come quite far since the days when I diapered my children 40 years ago. Back then it was looking for the perfect "rubber pants" that didn't get stiff and rip.
So, you might be asking yourself, why wool and not acrylic. Isn't wool hot in the summer?
Actually, just the opposite is true. Because wool breaths it keeps us cooler in summer and warmer in winter as it helps our body regulate its temperature.
Wool has some other amazing qualities. It is flame resistant, completely sustainable, resistant to stains, repels dust mites and research has found that people who sleep on wool on, in and with wool get a better nights sleep. Plus, mattresses and rugs / flooring made from wool can bind and store toxins and who doesn't like better air quality.
